First thing to be done at your home before inviting spring is gutter cleaning. It has to be done without fail to avoid clogging of water that damages walls and roof. Following are simple guidelines for cleaning gutters.
* Pick up a sunny day and get all the essential tools such as nails, hammer, ladder, trash bags, plumber's snake used to remove any clogged up dirt from downspout, and gloves ready. If possible try to get help from your family member or a friend to ease the task.
* Now, position the ladder so that you can reach the gutters very easily. Make sure that you do not place the ladder on the gutter to avoid any damage to the gutter.
* Put on gloves to your hand and try to eliminate as much of waste like leaves and other dirt into trash bags. Do not throw it on the floor, it will double your work.
* If the mud is stuck hard to the gutter, remove it carefully with a gutter scoop or trowel. Do it gently to avoid damage to the gutter.
* Once you have removed all the dirt, pour some water and wash it thoroughly until clear water runs down the downspout.
* During the entire cleaning process, take care not to clog the downspout.
* Once the cleaning part is done, check for any gutter leakages. Even if there are any minor leakages, water will pierce in to the roof causing damage to the roof.
* If you find any leakages, seal them and if they are too many cracks in the gutter, it is better to change it. If any of the nails are loose, fix them.
* If you are not capable enough to handle the work, hire a gutter cleaning service.
When you are done with cleaning and checking the gutter for leakage, it is suggested to place the gutter mesh that catches all the dirt allowing free flow of water. This will ease you next cleaning task. It is suggested to use goggles to protect the eyes from dust.
