St. Mary's Church, Putney
In 1973 an arson attack gutted much of the church. Rebuilding was not completed until nearly ten years later, when the church was rehallowed by the Bishop of Woolwich, on 6 February 1982. This restoration has led to the altar not being in the usual place in the chancel or even at the eastern end of the nave, but instead half-way down the northern side of the nave, with the seating arranged to reflect this.[1] The pipe organ is by the Danish firm of Marcussen & Søn.[2] The architect of the restoration was Ronald Sims.East Putney tube station
The junction between the District Line tracks and what is now the National Rail loop to the main line is immediately to the south of the station. Two pairs of tracks (one pair for each operator) run through the station giving it a narrow Y-shaped arrangement with a shared central island platform and two separate platforms across the tracks for opposite directions. The street-level station entrance and buildings lie between the two arms of the Y. The isolated National Rail platform is disused and overgrown, but the National Rail platform on the central island is in working order. Although it is not served by regular trains it is very occasionally used for terminating services from Wimbledon in connection with engineering works. A barrier has been built on the central island platform across the part of the platform that forks off to the north-east and forms the right arm of the Y.University Boat Race Stones
The stones define the start and finish points of the Championship Course (4 miles and 374 yards (6,779 m) from Putney to Mortlake, as measured along the centre of the river) used in the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race and other rowing races, including the Head of the River Race. The stones are marked "U.B.R" for University Boat Race.Lower Holloway
