The western part of the station building (to the left seen from Totteridge Lane) is a retail unit. It has been occupied by an estate agent for several years, and was previously a jeweller called Kempster & Sampson, a branch of a now defunct jeweller in Gants Hill. Just to the west of the station is a block of flats (visible at the left edge of the picture), and west of that is a strip of green belt land.
The new North Finchley bus station opened in 2004, but closed several months later due to safety issues after a pensioner walked into the shelter through the wrong entrance, was hit by a bus, and killed. The bus station was reopened in March 2007 after safety improvements were implemented. They included the addition of a barrier at the exit and a public address system. St John's Gate is one of the few tangible remains from Clerkenwell's monastic past, it was built in 1504 by Prior Thomas Docwra as the south entrance to the inner precinct of the Priory of the Knights of Saint John - the Knights Hospitallers.
