The building itself has seen many changes; parts of the existing church have survived from medieval times, such as the 15th century tower and some of the nave arcading, and the early 16th century Bishop West Chapel, built by Bishop Nicholas West. Most of the building, however, dates from the substantial re-build of 1836. Some of the pillars and arches in the nave are medieval, but both the north and the south arcades were widened in the 1836 rebuilding.
North of the station, the eastbound tracks of the branch formerly crossed over the tracks of the Clapham Junction line via a bridge and then ran parallel with the main line on a viaduct for some distance before merging with the tracks at Point Pleasant junction to the east of Putney Bridge Road (A3209). This link is no longer used and connections are made by the former westbound branch track which operates as a single line. The main decks of the disused viaduct has been removed although the central piers and the abutments of the viaduct remain.
The stones define the start and finish points of the Championship Course (4 miles and 374 yards (6,779 m) from Putney to Mortlake, as measured along the centre of the river) used in the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race and other rowing races, including the Head of the River Race. The stones are marked "U.B.R" for University Boat Race.
