Terminal 1 was opened in 1968 and was formally opened by Queen Elizabeth II in May 1969.[46] In 2005, a substantial redesign and redevelopment of the terminal was completed, which saw the opening of the new Eastern Extension, doubling the departure lounge in size and creating additional seating and retail space. The terminal has an area of 74,601m2. It is home to Heathrow's second largest carrier, bmi, airlines belonging to the Star Alliance, and Aer Lingus. Before Terminal 5 opened, Terminal 1 was the base for British Airways' domestic network from Heathrow and for a few long haul routes. It is set to be closed and demolished around 2013/14[6] for the second phase of building the new Terminal 2, scheduled for completion in 2019.
As of 14 February 2010, the station is undergoing renovation works which will feature an extended control room, the remaining two (of six) escalators being refurbished, a station enhancement and two Step Free Access lifts from the ticket hall (located near the bottom of the escalators from street level) to the platforms. Step Free Access to street level will continue to be served by the two BAA lifts to the Coach station.
On 7 January 2005, both the loop track and the station were closed temporarily in order to allow the construction of a new rail junction to link to the new Heathrow Terminal 5 station. All trains reverted to using the original westbound track from Hatton Cross direct to Heathrow Terminals 1, 2, 3 which was used prior to the opening of Heathrow Terminal 4. For passengers travelling to or from Heathrow Terminal 4, a shuttle bus was provided from Hatton Cross tube station. This situation continued until 17 September 2006 when the loop line and station were reopened following completion of the construction, and with new security and customer announcement technologies in place at the station.
