The station was opened on 1 May 1903 by the Great Eastern Railway (GER) on its Woodford to Ilford line (the Fairlop Loop).[2] As a consequence of the 1921 Railways Act, the GER was merged with other railway companies in 1923 to become part of the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER).

This line designed to stimulate suburban growth was closed due to a lack of custom on 1 October 1908 and did not reopen until 2 March 1930. In the interim the 1921 Railways Act, had caused the GER to be merged with other railway companies in 1923 and the new operator was the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER). As part of the 1935 - 1940 "New Works Programme" of the London Passenger Transport Board the majority of the loop was to be transferred to form the eastern extensions of the Central line. Although work commenced in 1938 it was suspended upon the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 and work only recommenced in 1946.
Goswell Road is a road in the south of the London Borough of Islington. It runs north from the border of the City of London to The Angel. There is dispute over the origins of the name, with some sources claiming the road was named after a nearby garden called 'Goswelle' or 'Goderell' which belonged to Robert de Ufford, 1st Earl of Suffolk,[7] whilst others state it derives from "God's Well", and the traditional pagan practice of well-worship.[8]
LNER trains continued to serve the High Level station, with services to East Finchley continuing until 2 March 1941.[2] After that date LNER trains operated between Finsbury Park and Alexandra Palace only. The start of Underground services between Finchley Central and Mill Hill East in May 1941 was the last part of the Northern Heights Project to be completed.[3]
