Hackney Downs

Hackney Downs is an open space and a broader area in Lower Clapton, in the London Borough of Hackney; it is also the name of a local council ward. It borders on Stoke Newington to the west and Shacklewell to the south. Although part of Clapton, as a distinct area, it can be said to be bounded by Amhurst Road to the south, Kenninghall Road to the north, Cricketfield Road to the east and the railway to the west, thus occupying most of the western half of Lower Clapton and some of the shrinking district of Shacklewell. The streets north and south of the park are dominated by social housing ? these areas were largely rebuilt during the 1930s and 1960s.

Clapton Girls Technology College

In May 1916, the name was changed to Clapton County Secondary School for Girls when it moved to new buildings in Laura Place. Due to WWII, in September 1939, the school was evacuated to Bishop's Stortford. It was called the John Howard Secondary School for Girls, named after John Howard (prison reformer) (1726-90), in 1947 and had around 450 girls. In 1966, the Queen Mother visited the school.

Charing Cross

Since the second half of the eighteenth century Charing Cross has been seen as the centre of London.[17] From the early 19th century, legislation that was applicable only to the London metropolis used Charing Cross as a central point to define its geographical scope. Its later use in legislation waned in favour of providing a schedule of local government areas and became mostly obsolete with the official creation of Greater London in 1965.

Victoria Embankment

The Victoria Embankment is part of the Thames Embankment, a road and walkway along the north bank of the River Thames in London. Victoria Embankment extends from the City of Westminster into the City of London.
