The station opened in June 1900 as part of an extension of the City & South London Railway to Clapham Common one stop to the south. It is one of two remaining stations that has an island platform in the station tunnel, serving both the northbound and southbound lines; the other is Clapham Common. The original station building was replaced in the mid 1920s when the line was modernised and that building has, in turn, recently had the façade reclad.

Vauxhall Bridge

The London County Council's resident engineer, Sir Alexander Binnie, submitted a design for a steel bridge, which proved unpopular. At the request of the LCC, Binnie submitted a new design for a bridge of five spans, to be built in concrete and faced with granite.[12]

Stockwell tube station

The total capacity of the shelter was around 1,600 people. Access was via the station as well as two further entrance shafts containing spiral staircases, one of which is located at the middle of the junction of South Lambeth Road and Clapham Road, and the other on Studley Road. The shelter was completed in September 1942, and was used by the Government until 1944 when it was opened to the public. It was used for one year as a shelter. After the war it was used for a period to billet military personnel. Like a number of other deep level shelters, it is presently being used for secure archiving.

Manor House tube station

During the planning of the Victoria Line a proposal to transfer Manor House station to the Victoria Line was put forward. New tunnels were also proposed for the Piccadilly Line between Finsbury Park and Turnpike Lane, considerably reducing the travelling time from Outer North London to Central London. The inconvenience caused during re-construction, as well as the cost, ensured that the idea was not pursued.

Harringay Stadium

In 1937, Harringay Stadium was part of a scheme by the owner of the Romford greyhound, track, Arthur Leggett, to increase attendance at his venue.
